Tiket mobil kecil Rp 20 ribu saja sekali menyeberang, penumpang gratis.

Last month, I flew Garuda Indonesia airline from Singapore to Jakarta. The time in Departure Terminal of Terminal 3 Changi International Airport (SIN) Singapore was worth spending. I also spent a little time waiting in SATS Executive Lounge prior to proceeding to boarding gate.

For me, reading and writing while waiting for the flight is worthwile. But spending time for going around and shooting with my mobile phone brought so many things to be memorized and shared.

Here are some shots that you might get if your flight departed from Terminal 3 Changi International Airport Singapore:

Pemantik-pemantik api dinyalakan, balon-balon mulai menggelembung.

Semua tersihir balon udara.

#TheTerminal Series 02 UPG

People may say airports in Indonesia are old-school and old-fashioned. But there is Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia which shows a modern look.

Internationally coded as UPG, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport serves flights as main-hub for eastern Indonesia. It is built by Indonesian engineers and designed by Indonesian architects. It shows good compromise among the function as airport, tropical climate and traditional South Sulawesi visualization.

I always enjoy my transit here. It is very easy to find shooting spots. I wish more Indonesian airports were built with similar compromises as this airport has.

Pastikan point-of-interest memperoleh porsi cukup.

Taking Fireworks Pictures with BlackBerry 9900

Fireworks is always interesting. Serious photographers might grab a DSLR and slide it into a sturdy tripod. Exposure would be set to slow-shutter speed setting to capture the fireworks trails.

But what would we do with only a mobile phone camera in hand?

Capturing pictures doesn’t solely rely on gear. As long as we get the idea beforehand, then execution just needs a little practice.

In an event in Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta a couple weeks ago, there was fireworks show to finalize the day. I got myself BlackBerry 9990 in-hand, which I have just received a couple of days back.

BlackBerry 9900 has a smart light meter to capture correct exposure in dark backgroound. Photo by Kristupa Saragih

BlackBerry 9900 has a smart light meter to capture correct exposure in dark backgroound. Photo by Kristupa Saragih

First impression, BlackBerry 9900 camera is more responsive than my previous BlackBerry 9780. It has less shutter lag, less time-lapse in-between photo-taking, and smarter light meter. Bigger screen in BlackBerry 9900 is a big addition with better image quality.

Although BlackBerry 9900 camera doesn’t have autofocus-lock, it doesn’t really matter on shooting fireworks. In certain distance of shooting, less autofocus-lock doesn’t become a handicap in producing acceptable mobile phone camera pictures.

I still could capture dark sky as total black, while some other mobile phone cameras produces grayish cast. I also could produce sharp images in a bit difficult situation with dim ambient light and dark background.

I thought I was lucky to be on the right time and the right place to capture the fireworks. But with BlackBerry 9900 in my hand, yes, I am the lucky man with the right gear.

Please be noticed, that none of the pictures attached here have undergone anykind of digital editing. They are all original without any single adjustment.

Orang Jawa Petani Teh di Kaki Gunung Dempo, Pagar Alam, Sumatra Selatan

Pagi yang indah di Pagar Alam, Sumatra Selatan. Disambut kesejukan pagi udara pegunungan, Gunung Dempo berdiri gagah berlatar belakang langit biru.

Kamera berlensa lebar jadi pilihan untuk dibawa. Sekedar ingin simple, satu bodi kamera dan satu lensa. Filter CPL tentu wajib terpasang.

Kemarin Gunung Dempo tersaput kabut.

Twisting Photos with Camera in BlackBerry

Twist #01 - Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Twist #01 - Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Twist #01 - Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

You don’t take pictures, you make ones.

It’s probably only lights in ceiling of a shopping mall. In an afternoon on a trip to Makassar, South Sulawesi last week we paid a visit to Trans Studio, Sunday (24/10). This is the biggest shopping arcade in East Indonesia.

Some of my fellows and I were chilling out after a fun photo shoot with Fotografer.net members in Makassar. Playing around with our BlackBerry camera, Harlim came to me and showed some fun photos. He twisted the BlackBerry to get a slow-speed effect on lights in the ceiling of Trans Studio.

Yes, we could not adjust shutter-speed in BlackBerry camera manually. You don’t need it actually, as long as we recognize that the light is dim enough for BlackBerry to automatically set itself shooting in slow shutter-speed. Then, here we go playing around with moving effect.

Then shortly, we got ourself busy twisting BlackBerry. We had some types, there were Onyx 9700, Javelin 8900, Pearl 3G 9105 and Gemini 8520. And we succeeded to twist them, had fun with some twisting photos.

All pictures here were taken by me with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx. It’s simple, just twist the BlackBerry and press the shutter-release button while keep twisting it. It’s easy, you may easily make ones yourself. All pictures shown here are original, no digital editing.

An Afternoon in Rooftop

It was a clear afternoon, in a rooftop of a shopping mall in Jogja. I was doing a location scouting with a fellow photographer of mine. It is an open parking area there, and I just couldn’t help my eyes to find interesting subjects to shoot.

I simply grabbed my BlackBerry 9700, activated the camera and got myself busy shooting.

Harmonic Disharmony. I found sets of chiller-generators and found that the stripes build a good pattern. Composed in diagonal and make sure the perspective worked out for it. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Jungle of Poles. I found that some antennas, radio repeaters and cellular transmitters build an interesting vertical lines. What I did was simply line them up to combine a good composition. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Exit or Escape? The signs were also interesting. I used a focusing-lock feature in BlackBerry 9700 to make off-center composition possible. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

May I Have One, Please? One of important keys to create eye-catching photograph is to shoot in unsual angle and avoid eye-level view. Shadow works out great for that purpose. All you have to do is to keep it simple. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Lonely. This is an actual view of a parking lot in rooftop. I saw a group of photographers doing a model photoshoot. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Camera in mobile phone is simple. There are no shutter speed and aperture settings, as simple as point-and-shoot. You may concentrate more on subjects around you and attract your attention. But you should always keep in mind that the important things on making pictures are: idea, light and composition.

Making Creative Shots with BlackBerry Bold 9700

People might have common thought that great pictures should be made by expensive and big DSLR type of camera. Well, it’s true but it doesn’t have to be always that way. Camera is only a tool. Behind great photographs there are a pair of good eye and great ideas.

I explored my previous mobile phone, BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin, and made great pictures with it, “Motret dengan Ponsel: BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin“. I loved it, good quality of camera in a mobile phone. But then I got myself BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx to replace it. I thought it might have better quality camera, and I’m right.

There were so much fun I had when shooting around with this mobile phone. I left my pocket camera which used to accompany me wherever I go. You may leave home without your pocket camera. But almost nobody would leave home without mobile phone. It’s easier to bring only one gadget instead of two, isn’t it?

Pictures attached here didn’t go through any single digital editing. I only resized them down. Hopefully they would make you witness the strengths and weaknesses of camera in BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx.

My tip: let your eyes and mind concentrate on the photo subjects. Leave technical things to the ease of use and compactness of camera in mobile phone.

I have just landed in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia when my fellows brought me downtown. On our way to parking lot, we passed through this colorful wall and our car pulled over right away. It was clear blue sky and almost noon. Technically, no important issue on getting pretty and neat picture. The only thing matters here is diagonal composition, which makes the picture appears in dynamic visualization. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

It was early morning in Jakarta, Indonesia when I needed to catch my 7 AM flight. Got my bag out from my room, took out the room key and I realized that it was on the right position of light fall. The idea is simple, I want to symbolize my life as a traveler with bag and an alley in hotel. Technically, I just only needed to focus the camera correctly with pressing the camera button halfway down until green box appears then push it all the way down. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

The easy way to make your picture appears eye-catching is shooting in unusual angle. Instead of shooting in eye-level angle of view, shoot down or shoot up. I was taking a ciggy-break with a friend in Ayala Center, a complex of shopping centers in Makati, Manila, Philippines. When looking up, I noticed the lines of these buildings might be arranged into an eye-catching composition. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

It doesn't have to be always the real subject to be shot. Image in reflective surface would help a lot to show your idea in different and creative way. It was a bright afternoon in Ayala Center, Makati, Manila, Philippines and the glass was clean. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

If something attracted your attention then it most likely would be nice to be photographed. I noticed these colorful merchandise in cashier desk of a coffee shop in Glorietta 5 shopping arcade, Ayala Center, Makati, Manila, Philippines. A colorful list of menu and price just make itself a good match. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

Motret dengan Ponsel: BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin

Kecil-kecil cabe rawit.

The Beauty of Toba Lake. Pemandangan di Desa Silalahi, Silahisabungan, Dairi, Sumatra Utara. Waktu pemotretan pagi hari, sehingga tak terlalu terkendala dengan pencahayaan. Cukup memilih angle yang tepat sehingga mendapat komposisi fotografi yang apik. Kamera: BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Ide Sederhana

On Their Own. Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Foto Interior

My Room in Surabaya.

Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Food Photography dengan Side Light dan Back Light

Sarapan Pagi.

Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Eksterior Bangunan

Sunset in Malang.

Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Suasana dari Ketinggian

View to Semeru. Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Suasana Dramatis Seperti Aslinya

Jakarta Sky From 22nd Floor. Langit kerap kali tampil dramatis.

Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Landscape dengan Lensa Lebar

Sunset in Tigapanah. Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Landscape dengan Lensa Tele

Sky on Fire. Kamera: BB Curve 8900 Javelin. Foto oleh: Kristupa Saragih

Mendokumentasikan Suasana dengan Sentuhan Artistik

My Shooting Buddy.

Modal membuat foto bagus cukup sederhana.

Traveling with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Camera

Taal. When traveling you must have pictures that would make you memorize the place. In a visit to Taal, Batangas Province, Philippines, I found this sign inside a Spanish colonial style building. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

You must live in the other planet or live in another century back if you haven’t traveled anywhere in your life. Traveling becomes an integrated part of life and for some people becomes their habit and desire. One important thing is to have a camera to be your best traveling buddy.

One compact camera is enough to accompany you during the trip. It was years ago when traveler had to bring, at least, two gadgets: mobile phone and pocket camera. Image sensor, resolution and quality in camera in mobile phone was not good. Today, there are plenty of options of mobile phone which has good quality of image sensor, lens and big resolution.

I know a mobile phone today reaches 12 megapixel resolution. Another mobile phone put on the legendary Carl-Zeiss lens. You may want anything, but it’s better to have what you really need. I choose BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx which has 3.2 megapixel camera.

It goes whereever I go. I seldom bring my pocket camera. My big professional DSLR is with me in serious targets. Anyway, simplicity in mobile phone camera would let us concentrate more on the subject and idea rather than technical things, i.e shutter speed and aperture settings.

Sample of pictures here didn’t go through any single digital editing. I only resized them down so you may witness the strengths and weaknesses of mobile phone camera. Let the pictures talk.

Afternoon in Kalasey. Overlooking Manado Tua volcano in the distance, I found this place calming. It was a bit cloudy but some parts of blue sky occured. Shooting only the volcano would not distinguish it with another shot from another angle. An addition of foreground would make it distinctive. If you visit Manado, North Sulawesi you must give yourself a photo of Manado Tua. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

Filipino Traditional Dance. I positioned myself as an ordinary tourist. If I put myself as serious photographer, I would remove the background and find more artistic setting. But this kind of situation is a scene that any traveler might face. There was low light condition and the subject was moving. I read the movement and tried to find the pattern, as any kind of dance would have, and caught the moment of when some dancers sat still while the others moving. Pre-focus, hold the camera button half-way then only pressed fully down at the desired moment. This is a regular dance performance in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

New Year's Fireworks. Shooting fireworks is a challenge, even if you're armed with DSLR. It's even much more challenging to shoot fireworks with mobile phone camera. It couldn't measure exposure value as in DSLR, and we couldn't set aperture and speed manually. The effective way to shoot is to determine the exact location of fireworks, pre-focus by pressing the camera button half-way down and pushing it all-the-way down at the desired moment. It's hard, but I made about 2 out of 10 successful pictures in New Year 2010 Eve in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

Jeepney. When traveling, you must give yourself photo of an icon of the place you visit. Manila, of course, is famous with its Jeepney, the common public transport. When shooting in front of Malate Church, I found a lot of Jeepney passing by. It's only a couple hundred meters away from Roxas Boulevard, Manila Bay, Manila, Philippines. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

St Nino Festival. A trip that match an event would give some more memories, things to learn, experiences, and subject for photography. St Nino Festival is held annualy in Manila, Philippines. I found this eye-catching costume of guards among the crowd of thousands of people in the streets of Pasay City, Manila, Philippines. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

Nasi Kuning. Another important thing in traveling photography is making photos of local food. Yellow rice in Yogyakarta, Indonesia is made of turmeric and accompanied with grilled chicken, sliced fried tempe, and some condiments. Light situation was available light, a side light from nearby window. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx
