#TheTerminal Series 02 UPG

People may say airports in Indonesia are old-school and old-fashioned. But there is Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia which shows a modern look.

Internationally coded as UPG, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport serves flights as main-hub for eastern Indonesia. It is built by Indonesian engineers and designed by Indonesian architects. It shows good compromise among the function as airport, tropical climate and traditional South Sulawesi visualization.

I always enjoy my transit here. It is very easy to find shooting spots. I wish more Indonesian airports were built with similar compromises as this airport has.

All pictures in this post were taken by BlackBerry 9700 and post-processed in Molome.

Pastikan point-of-interest memperoleh porsi cukup.

Taking Fireworks Pictures with BlackBerry 9900

Fireworks is always interesting. Serious photographers might grab a DSLR and slide it into a sturdy tripod. Exposure would be set to slow-shutter speed setting to capture the fireworks trails.

But what would we do with only a mobile phone camera in hand?

Capturing pictures doesn’t solely rely on gear. As long as we get the idea beforehand, then execution just needs a little practice.

In an event in Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta a couple weeks ago, there was fireworks show to finalize the day. I got myself BlackBerry 9990 in-hand, which I have just received a couple of days back.

First impression, BlackBerry 9900 camera is more responsive than my previous BlackBerry 9780. It has less shutter lag, less time-lapse in-between photo-taking, and smarter light meter. Bigger screen in BlackBerry 9900 is a big addition with better image quality.

Although BlackBerry 9900 camera doesn’t have autofocus-lock, it doesn’t really matter on shooting fireworks. In certain distance of shooting, less autofocus-lock doesn’t become a handicap in producing acceptable mobile phone camera pictures.

I still could capture dark sky as total black, while some other mobile phone cameras produces grayish cast. I also could produce sharp images in a bit difficult situation with dim ambient light and dark background.

I thought I was lucky to be on the right time and the right place to capture the fireworks. But with BlackBerry 9900 in my hand, yes, I am the lucky man with the right gear.

Please be noticed, that none of the pictures attached here have undergone anykind of digital editing. They are all original without any single adjustment.

Twisting Photos with Camera in BlackBerry

Twist #01 - Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

You don’t take pictures, you make ones.

It’s probably only lights in ceiling of a shopping mall. In an afternoon on a trip to Makassar, South Sulawesi last week we paid a visit to Trans Studio, Sunday (24/10). This is the biggest shopping arcade in East Indonesia.

Some of my fellows and I were chilling out after a fun photo shoot with Fotografer.net members in Makassar. Playing around with our BlackBerry camera, Harlim came to me and showed some fun photos. He twisted the BlackBerry to get a slow-speed effect on lights in the ceiling of Trans Studio.

Yes, we could not adjust shutter-speed in BlackBerry camera manually. You don’t need it actually, as long as we recognize that the light is dim enough for BlackBerry to automatically set itself shooting in slow shutter-speed. Then, here we go playing around with moving effect.

Then shortly, we got ourself busy twisting BlackBerry. We had some types, there were Onyx 9700, Javelin 8900, Pearl 3G 9105 and Gemini 8520. And we succeeded to twist them, had fun with some twisting photos.

All pictures here were taken by me with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx. It’s simple, just twist the BlackBerry and press the shutter-release button while keep twisting it. It’s easy, you may easily make ones yourself. All pictures shown here are original, no digital editing.

AirAsia’s New Application for BlackBerry

AirAsia BlackBerry Application's front page

AirAsia BlackBerry Application's front page

The world’s best low-budget airline AirAsia has just released their new application for BlackBerry. In their e-mail, they said, “This application is for ‘Demo’ purposes only it has no direct connection to the live AirAsia systems. It currently points to a test server. Please take the time to browse through its functions.”

So far, in demo version, it seems that the application is easy to navigate. Step-by-step instruction is clear and whoever familiar with web-version of AirAsia website would also find the same menu in BlackBerry application. Main menu: Book a Flight, My Bookings, Mobile Checkin, Boarding Passes, Flight Status and About. Looks like there are some type-errors that they have to fix.

Menu for selecting flight lets user select their desirable flight and brings you to this confirmation screen.

The application allows user to pre-order their preferred onboard meal, comfort kit and type of baggage.

Another good thing is pick-a-seat menu. It shows the legend of seat categories. Hopefully the changes of occupancy is accurate and real time.

Finally, it ends up in payment form. AirAsia needs to confirm that the form in secure and payment system through this BlackBerry application is completely safe.

An Afternoon in Rooftop

It was a clear afternoon, in a rooftop of a shopping mall in Jogja. I was doing a location scouting with a fellow photographer of mine. It is an open parking area there, and I just couldn’t help my eyes to find interesting subjects to shoot.

I simply grabbed my BlackBerry 9700, activated the camera and got myself busy shooting.

Harmonic Disharmony. I found sets of chiller-generators and found that the stripes build a good pattern. Composed in diagonal and make sure the perspective worked out for it. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Jungle of Poles. I found that some antennas, radio repeaters and cellular transmitters build an interesting vertical lines. What I did was simply line them up to combine a good composition. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Exit or Escape? The signs were also interesting. I used a focusing-lock feature in BlackBerry 9700 to make off-center composition possible. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

May I Have One, Please? One of important keys to create eye-catching photograph is to shoot in unsual angle and avoid eye-level view. Shadow works out great for that purpose. All you have to do is to keep it simple. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Lonely. This is an actual view of a parking lot in rooftop. I saw a group of photographers doing a model photoshoot. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih

Camera in mobile phone is simple. There are no shutter speed and aperture settings, as simple as point-and-shoot. You may concentrate more on subjects around you and attract your attention. But you should always keep in mind that the important things on making pictures are: idea, light and composition.

Making Creative Shots with BlackBerry Bold 9700

People might have common thought that great pictures should be made by expensive and big DSLR type of camera. Well, it’s true but it doesn’t have to be always that way. Camera is only a tool. Behind great photographs there are a pair of good eye and great ideas.

I explored my previous mobile phone, BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin, and made great pictures with it, “Motret dengan Ponsel: BlackBerry Curve 8900 Javelin“. I loved it, good quality of camera in a mobile phone. But then I got myself BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx to replace it. I thought it might have better quality camera, and I’m right.

There were so much fun I had when shooting around with this mobile phone. I left my pocket camera which used to accompany me wherever I go. You may leave home without your pocket camera. But almost nobody would leave home without mobile phone. It’s easier to bring only one gadget instead of two, isn’t it?

Pictures attached here didn’t go through any single digital editing. I only resized them down. Hopefully they would make you witness the strengths and weaknesses of camera in BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx.

My tip: let your eyes and mind concentrate on the photo subjects. Leave technical things to the ease of use and compactness of camera in mobile phone.

I have just landed in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia when my fellows brought me downtown. On our way to parking lot, we passed through this colorful wall and our car pulled over right away. It was clear blue sky and almost noon. Technically, no important issue on getting pretty and neat picture. The only thing matters here is diagonal composition, which makes the picture appears in dynamic visualization. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

It was early morning in Jakarta, Indonesia when I needed to catch my 7 AM flight. Got my bag out from my room, took out the room key and I realized that it was on the right position of light fall. The idea is simple, I want to symbolize my life as a traveler with bag and an alley in hotel. Technically, I just only needed to focus the camera correctly with pressing the camera button halfway down until green box appears then push it all the way down. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

The easy way to make your picture appears eye-catching is shooting in unusual angle. Instead of shooting in eye-level angle of view, shoot down or shoot up. I was taking a ciggy-break with a friend in Ayala Center, a complex of shopping centers in Makati, Manila, Philippines. When looking up, I noticed the lines of these buildings might be arranged into an eye-catching composition. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

It doesn't have to be always the real subject to be shot. Image in reflective surface would help a lot to show your idea in different and creative way. It was a bright afternoon in Ayala Center, Makati, Manila, Philippines and the glass was clean. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx

If something attracted your attention then it most likely would be nice to be photographed. I noticed these colorful merchandise in cashier desk of a coffee shop in Glorietta 5 shopping arcade, Ayala Center, Makati, Manila, Philippines. A colorful list of menu and price just make itself a good match. Photo by: Kristupa Saragih with BlackBerry Bold 9700 Onyx
